How will you make your own mark when 2 million blog posts are being published every day? How will you lure people to click your article instead of others? Choosing a great tempting headline to lure people to visit your article is the answer to all these alarming issues.
Why Headlines are so important?
A headline is the first line in your article which is read by readers instead of your post. If they find it catchy then and only then they will click it for further reading.
On an average, people just read the headline and ignore the rest and only a few among them will be generous enough to read your whole article.
If your headline becomes successful in grabbing the reader’s attention your conversion rate will definitely increase.
So Spiders, follow some of these powerful tips to create your own Tempting Headlines and get rewarded with high traffic: –
Use long tail keywords –
Long tail keywords are comparatively longer and specific than normal searched keywords. As a result it has less competition compared to small tail keywords.
Generally, people are more likely to type small phrases in search engine than long phrases. So there are only a few specific peoples who are going to type a long phrase and hence probability of clicking these links will increase.
For example: If your article based on green color shirt for women appears under the keyword ‘shirt’, the probability of your article being read will be very less, but if your article appears under the keyword “green colour shirt for women” then your article will have high probability of being read.
Search and collect many long tail keywords and then rearrange them to form a suitable headline for your post.
Note : Don’t exceed your headline more than 70 characters as Google will truncate the title with ellipses (…).
First and last three words of your headline matters a lot –
Always use your long tail keywords either at the first or last three words of your headline.
Most of the time people scan the whole sentence rather than reading it whole.
Use clear yet mysterious headline –
Try to write headline that will make people curious enough to click your link and as well as read your whole post till the end.
The most common example of this is media. How media makes us curious by displaying a mysterious headline which forces us to watch their show to kill our curiosity.
Use numbers in your headlines –
Using numbers in your headline draws more attention of readers and make them unique. There is strength and weight in numbers.
As said by Buffer’s Courtney Seiter
“Numbers work well in headlines because humans like predictability and dislike uncertainty,”
For example – On reading this article’s headline you picture that you will be provided 11 powerful tips to create tempting headlines… You got a clear idea of what to expect from the post.
But instead, if the headline would have been “Powerful tips to create tempting headlines”, the probability would have been that you would never be here reading this in the first place.
Ask Questions –
Asking questions always increase the curiosity of people and results in engagement of the brain. Curiosity is something that a lot of people own and this will definitely help you to seek their attention. They will always want to know the answer to the question asked.
You should also have faced a similar situation where you read a question but didn’t find the answer written. So probability would be that you would search the answer to the question yourself using any means available ( like searching on GOOGLE ) right?
So try to include 5W’s in your headline –
Who, What, When, Where and Why
Make sure your headline is unique –
After getting your final headline make sure that it is unique. There may be chances that someone also used the same headline for their own article.
So always search your headline in Google and you will get the list of used headlines in seconds. If you discover that your headline is already being used than rewrite it.
Use Capitalization technique-
There are two ways for capitalizing titles: sentence case style and title case style.
Sentence case style is a technique when you write a sentence by capitalizing only the first word and any proper nouns.
———-“This is a sentence case statement”
Title case style is a technique when the first letter of each word is capitalized, such as:
———-“This Is A Title Case Statement”
Choose your headline style according to your readers and stick to it for your whole blog.
Define about your article –
This is the most important point to keep in mind. During selecting words for your headline by following above points don’t forget to clearly specify what your article is about. This should be your main motive towards writing your headline.
Your title should overcome the objective of your article. Your readers should know what can be expected from your article before reading it.
Use power words like You/Your –
Using of words like ‘You’ make readers think that you are directly talking to them.
According to an article by Buffer –
“This is evident in the viral headlines examined here. ‘You’ was the No. 5 most popular word, and we find ‘your’ in the Top 20 as well.”
By using this word you are making sure that the article is for the readers and you are adding value for them through the article. It is important to write articles for the readers, not for the writers.
Include Emotional Words –
Emotion drives action and hence increases engagement.
For example, We always get attracted towards the emotional words like ‘Free’. Whenever we see this word our mind tends toward it to look further.
Some of the examples of emotional adjective words are –
Free, Incredible , Essential etc
